What should I wear?
You should wear appropriate business clothes.
Don't take a business card with just one hand.

What should I do when we first meet?
Who should I direct my speech to?

What do you recommend?
Do you have any suggestions?

Well, be careful!
Be cautious, be aware of differences!
Pay attention!
You might get into trouble!
You should give and receive it with both hands.
You should read the information.

Suggestion, recommendation: Should, ought to, had better
You'd better wear smart clothes.
You ought to learn company procedures!
Don't take a nod as a sign of agreement.

Do go to your meeting prepared.

What kind of flowers does your girl friend like?
Which color do you prefer?
How much will that be?
How much are the flowers?
How about going to the movies to celebrate?

To make the deal = to reach an agreement

She isn't ready to make the deal.

She isn't ready to close the deal.

My boss wasn't happy with the conditions.

We would have to adjust the price.

We would have to charge you more.

If you finish in June we could negotiate on the price.

I'm not happy...

Talking about life
Time expression
when
as soon as
before
after
until

As soon as I turn sixty, I want to retire.
Can you remember when Nick's friend Joe retired?
Joe retired as soon as he turned 50.
I want to retire when I'm still young.
Maybe I'll go to school after I stop working.
I will come home as soon as the movie finishes.
I won't retire until I'm 65.
Nick will retire as soon as he has enough money.

facilities
The lifts, conference halls, and most of the bedrooms were designed to accommodate disabled guests. Unfortunately, both my credit cards were stolen a week ago.

break up
Do you want to break up with me?

slow down
I think we should slow down a bit.

Let's not rush.

It was a mistake.  I didn't mean to.

Have you been to Italy?
I have been to France but I haven't been to Italy.

I am interested in taking a vacation.

I haven't traveled much.
I haven't been to Mexico.
I have never been to Mexico.
Where has Donna never been?
I've never been to Australia before?

How do you make the question about experience stronger?
Have you ever been to Africa?
Ever=at any time in your life

He has been to Germany three times.
Has she ever been to Argentina?

If we don't get there in 20 minutes, we're going to be late for our flight.

I've had a stroke of bad luck. (things are going wrong)
I've had a stroke of luck! I've won a trip to Paris.

We ended up getting a taxi to the airport.
We tired to take a shortcut and ended up getting lost.
We couldn't get flights, so we ended up staying at home.
end up = to finally be in as situation or place

If we don't hurry up we are going to miss our train.

I've had a stroke of bad luck.  My passport has been stolen!

Make polite questions

  1. What do you consider....?
  2. Could you tell me....?
  3. May I ask you....?
ex)  What do you consider your greatest strength?
May I ask you what your greatest weakness is?
Could you tell me what job you're doing?
